Leading from Behind: Language Experience in Action

Author: David R. Schleper

During Language Experience activities, students initiate and then work on a project for several days, documenting the experience, then dictate their experience to an adult, who translates their ASL into written English. This text becomes material for reading and writing instruction as the teacher helps the students see the connection between what they signed and what was written. The Leading from Behind DVD and manual demonstrate how this technique is used in a variety of elementary and high school settings.

The Clerc Center also offers a professional development workshop on this topic. E-mail or call (202) 651-5855 for more information.
