History Through Deaf Eyes

By Jean Bergey, Project Director

Are you interested in learning more about the history of Deaf Americans?  Did you ever wonder about how westward expansion, industrial growth or increased immigration might impact Deaf people?

This link will take you to a website that presents much of the "History Through Deaf Eyes" exhibition developed by Gallaudet University.

Content is arranged in 4 sections:

Formation of a Community - This area explains the founding of schools and what education meant for deaf students in the 1800s

Language and Identity - This area deals with American Sign Language, the oral education movement and the clash of values that impacted education in the US

Community Building - This area is about getting jobs and developing community connections from the early 1900s to the 1950s.

Awareness, Access and Change - In this section you will find photos and information about changes in attitude, technology and access that have occurred since the 1960s.
